Building school washrooms

In Ghana, plastic waste is a huge issue. There are limited waste collection or recycling systems. Plastic waste blocks waterways which provides breeding ground for mosquitos and malaria.

Unibrick building block

Fortunately we were introduced to Ghanaian company TrashSmart by our partner Engineers without Borders. Together we are working towards creating school washrooms from plastic waste. The current lack of a washroom forces students and teachers, particularly women, to regularly skip school.

TrashSmart will collect the plastic waste and work with a FUSE Kitchen to produce building blocks, so called Unibricks. These are based on an innovative design that makes it easy to build a solid structure.
