Wadden Tiles from recycled plastic for new World Heritage Center
The collaboration between the new World Heritage Center in Lauwersoog, The Great Plastic Bake Off and Rain(a)Way has resulted in an innovative product: a special Wadden Tile that will be placed in the public outdoor space of the new center. A unique place to show visitors what you can do with local plastic waste.
GPBO works with various partners in the port of Lauwersoog in a project in which plastic waste from the Wadden area is collected and converted into building materials. These materials can be used again in the port according to a circular concept. One of the products that are made is the Wadden tile. This was specially designed for the new World Heritage Center that will also be located in the port of Lauwersoog. The designer of the tile is Fien Dekker of Rain(a)Way, also a partner of GPBO. She has come up with a design that allows rainwater to pass through. This creates a connection with the natural soil, without a concrete intermediate layer. Landscape architectural firm LAOS Landschapsarchitecture B.V. will integrate the tile into the design of the WEC’s outdoor area.
The Wadden Tile will be able to be admired from 2025 when the World Heritage Center opens. The center will be a new place to experience the Wadden, where we are working on a healthy balance between people and nature, for the world of tomorrow. And with the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wadden Sea as inspiration.

Uniek product: Waddentegel van gerecycled plastic krijgt plek bij nieuwe Werelderfgoedcentrum Waddenzee
De samenwerking tussen het nieuwe WEC, The Great Plastic Bake Off en Rain(a)Way heeft een innovatief product opgeleverd: een speciale Waddentegel die een plek krijgt in de publieke buitenruimte van het nieuwe centrum. Een unieke plek om aan bezoekers te laten zien wat je met lokaal plastic afval kunt doen.
GPBO werkt in de haven van Lauwersoog met diverse partners samen in een project waarin plastic afval uit het Waddengebied wordt verzameld en omgezet in bouwmaterialen. Die materialen kunnen in de haven weer gebruikt worden volgens een circulair concept. Een van de producten die gemaakt worden is de Waddentegel. Deze is speciaal ontworpen voor het nieuwe Werelderfgoedcentrum dat ook in de haven van Lauwersoog komt te staan. Ontwerpster van de tegel is Fien Dekker van Rain(a)Way, tevens partner van GPBO. Zij heeft een ontwerp bedacht dat regenwater doorlaat. Daardoor ontstaat een verbinding met de natuurlijke bodem, zonder betonnen tussenlaag. Landschapsarchitectenbureau LAOS Landschapsarchitectuur B.V. zal de Waddentegel integreren in het ontwerp van het buitengebied van het WEC.
De Waddentegel zal vanaf 2025 te bewonderen zijn als het Werelderfgoedcentrum opengaat. Het centrum wordt een nieuwe plek om de Wadden mee te maken, waar gewerkt wordt aan een gezonde balans tussen mens en natuur, voor de wereld van morgen. En met het UNESCO Werelderfgoed de Waddenzee als inspiratie.
